What is Creek Week? Creek Weeks happen all around North Carolina in spring and fall, when people get together and take part in all kinds of water-related activities, including NC Stream Watch events, fishing tournaments, and creek cleanups. It's a time to learn about water quality, help out by preventing pollution and cleaning it up, and having fun while we do it! Check the tab below, titled "2024 Creek Weeks in the Piedmont Triad", to see this year's dates and locations for local Creek Weeks.
Who's in charge of Creek Weeks? Each Creek Week started in its own way, and many have changed over time, but most are collaborative efforts between local government departments: Public Works, Planning, Recreation/Parks, and organizations that serve these local governments, such as AmeriCorps and Regional Councils of Government. In our area, the Piedmont Triad Regional Council helps facilitate Creek Weeks through the Stormwater SMART program and its AmeriCorps Service Members. You'll see Stormwater SMART facilitating Creek Week activities like NC Stream Watch, pond explorations, EnviroScape lessons, and more! We assist both "official" Creek Week partners and what we call "Friends of Creek Week".
WHAT ARE FRIENDS OF CREEK WEEK?
A Friend of Creek Week is a person or group who wants to participate in the kind of events that typically happen during Creek Weeks, like litter cleanups, rainscaping workshops, and NC Stream Watch events.
Friends of Creek Week might want to lead these kinds of activities, too. Maybe you want your Scout troop to conduct a creek cleanup, or your HOA (Home Owners' Association) would like to hold a workshop about downspout disconnection. The Friends of Creek Week network can help promote or celebrate your event. Email us at stormwatersmart@ptrc.org with questions or to help with your event.
To register for events or see what other Friends are doing, just check the list of events on this page for cleanups and other activities near you. Check the details for information about how to participate or register for an event.
