Piedmont Together - Mapping Tool Briefing [Rockingham County]

As part of the Piedmont Together project, the Piedmont Triad Regional Council is developing an online mapping tool to help counties and municipalities establish strategic community investment opportunity areas. These are areas most likely to provide a significant return on investment. While this is a regional project, the final outcome is one that will benefit communities of every size. This meeting will address the following priorities:
  1. Land Development Modeling - Review the overall modeling process and structure (e.g. fishnet, development types, building types, etc.) and request each community to review and provide revisions to the generalized land use and zoning layers as presented in our online mapping tool;
  2. Return on Investment Study - Review of the regional return on investment methodology and results for the region and by county. Discuss potential uses and benefits to individual jurisdictions for identifying strategic community investment opportunity areas.
  3. Investment Opportunity Areas – Review our online mapping tool and request every community in our region to use the tool to identify at least one strategic Investment Opportunity Area(s) meeting the following criteria:
a. Is located in, or near downtown;
b. Includes at least one redevelopment &/or infill site or building (e.g. an old, underutilized industrial or commercial building);
c. Has potential for development/redevelopment as a vibrant, mixed-use, mixed-income community investment catalyst project;
d. Has potential to become a pedestrian-friendly, multi-modal community gathering area (e.g. town square, park, amphitheater);
e. May qualify for CDBG funding (existing requisite low- to moderate income households).
County and municipal managers and planners are invited to attend. See the attached flyer for additional information and feel free to forward it on to relevant parties. Please let myself or Paul Kron know if you have any questions. We look forward to working with you on this exciting project!
