Monitoring Program

Summary

In concert with the Middle and Lower Basin Programs, the Upper Cape Fear River Basin Association sustains a comprehensive water quality monitoring program as required by the NC Division of Water Resources' (NCDWR) Monitoring Coalition Program. This program allows for collective and more-efficient monitoring of in-stream water quality in lieu of the ambient monitoring requirements in each Association members' National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. The UCFRBA maintains a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with NCDWR binding its members to participate in the monitoring program.

Water quality parameters are sampled on a monthly basis and include:

- Temperature - Conductivity - Ammonia & Nitrate/Nitrite
- Dissolved Oxygen  - Turbidity - Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen
- Acidity (pH) - Fecal Coliform Bacteria  - Total Phosphorus

Laboratory services are currently provided by Meritech Inc., located in Reidsville, NC. Meritech, Inc. has provided these services since 2005.

Monitoring Stations

The UCFRBA currently monitors a network of 40 monitoring stations throughout the Upper Cape Fear River Basin. These stations are indicated in green below.

Water Quality Database

The UCFRBA contracts with UNC-Wilmington to maintain an Online Database of all of its approved water quality data. This database also houses water quality data for the Middle and Lower Cape Fear monitoring coalitions. All data collected by the UCFRBA under its MOA with NCDWR may be accessed, analyzed, and downloaded from this website. Data may also be requested directly by contacting either of the UCFRBA's administrative staff.
