Haskett Creek Watershed Plan

Project Overview

Haskett Creek and Penwood Branch are located near the City of Asheboro in Randolph County.  These two streams have been listed on the federal 303(d) list of impaired waters for several decades due to their inability to adequately support aquatic life.  It is suspected that poor water quality in Haskett Creek and Penwood Branch is a result of their urban setting and stormwater runoff, however, few studies have explored potential sources of pollution within the watershed.

The Haskett Creek Watershed Plan was developed in consultation with local stakeholders to guide water quality improvements and coordinate restoration efforts. The plan investigates potential sources of pollution in the watershed and identifies collaborative, cost-effective strategies to enhance and protect surface waters. The ultimate goal is to restore aquatic habitat in Haskett Creek and Penwood Branch to support diverse benthic communities and meet water quality standards. The plan is meant to be a living document and will be updated and revised as new information, challenges, or opportunities arise. This project was generously supported by the NC Division of Water Resources' 205(j) grant program.

In order to increase plan access and usability, all information generated over the course of the project has been uploaded and formatted as an ESRI Story Map, which will be maintained by the NC Division of Water Resources. This website will be used to increase public awareness and track progress as new projects get underway. Click to view the complete Haskett Creek Watershed Action Plan Story Map.
